Attractively housed in reinforced stainless steel, this 1800-watt convection toaster oven features a 4/5-cubic-foot nonstick interior and Element IQ technology, which provides smarter control over the heat. Choose from nine pre-set functions: Toast, Bagel, Bake, Roast, Broil, Pizza, Cookies, Reheat, or Warm; each one comes with its own pre-programmed temperature and cooking time, eliminating the guesswork. The unit's broil function activates just the top heating elements to melt and brown food; its toast function activates the top and bottom heating elements to seal and crisp; and the bake function uses both the top and bottom heating elements, as well as the convection fan, to ensure thorough cooking, inside and out. Instead of the oven's five quartz heating elements having a fixed wattage, however, Element IQ functions much like a dimmer on a light switch, increasing or decreasing the power with a simple turn of the knob. The time and temperature for the pre-set programs can easily be adjusted to accommodate individual preferences--the oven will even remember the new settings for next time.

Combining durable materials and powerful performance with a strikingly modern design, users will want to leave the oven out on display and conveniently accessible for everyday use. Product DescriptionI've owned toaster/broiler combination ovens for many years. I great prefer them to traditional toasters due to their versatility. We had a GE one which lasted a decade- very well-made & durable, bought in 1984. We've since had ones from Black & Decker, Cuisinart, DeLonghi & a couple of other brands. After our GE one died, we never again found another oven that had it all, was easy to get food out of, and baked food evenly. There was always some issue- the center of an English muffin wouldn't brown while the edges got too dark. The rack wouldn't come out when you opened the broiler oven door, forcing you to reach into a dangerously-hot small oven & yank out food as quickly as possible w/ a knife or tongs (hoping you didn't drop it on the heating element below!) The bottom catch-all rach under the heating element wouldn't come out easily, or clean up well. Again, always some stupid but major issue which caused little but a big headache & unimpressive food.

I own a Breville coffeemaker, the kind that uses K-Cups. I've owned that since 2007, purchasing an upgraded one in 2010. I was so incredibly impressed with everything I ever bought from the Breville line that I thought, well, how bad the broiler oven be? Over time, the good reviews on every website & catalog stuck out with this item. Despite the rather steep cost at the time, we invested in this- and have never looked back. It is truly the oven of my dreams. I cook at home every night, and have for twenty years. I've owned many a George Foreman grill, a food chopper, a blender, regular toaster ovens, etc. Never have I felt so much love for a small appliance as I do for this Breville oven! (Though my K-Cup coffeemaker is a close second!)
The option is there to cook foods from frozen or not, at the touch of a button. Everything is labeled explicitly as to which setting to use, which temperature, even where to place the rack for each setting- right on the oven! I can set the minutes easily. I can increase or decrease the time as my items are cooking/baking. There is no guesswork anymore. It is precisely timed, and it's digital readout is large, bright & easy-to-read. Every night, my meat, starch & vegetables come out preceisely on time together now, because this machine is so incredibly accurate. I've found that either the directions for an item are absolutely spot-on with this oven, or it may take even a little less time because it's a convection oven, too. NEVER have I had an item take MORE time than what it says on the packaging for the food. This items heats quickly, but more importantly, it heats EVENLY. Every English muffin, bagel, piece of toast, hamburger bun (with or without cheese), hot dog roll, you name it- perfectly done. In approximately three years of ownership, I've had not one item get burnt by this machine, nor have I ever had to toss something because it didn't get heated through evenly. Steaks come out just beautifully, though I do put the broiler pan on a rack which is in the center, not the top, which is a variation from Breville's direction. I found that putting the broiler pan on a rack which was higher up than center caused smoking (due to the spurting fat from the meat). Pizza, as well, is something that I bake in the center, NOT on the bottom rack placement, which is again contradictory to instructions. But it just seems to work better that way. However, in all other instances (including baked casserole items like Chicken Divan), I do put the baking dish on the rack which is lettered "Bake", and cook it at it's normal temperature. With the convection feature, be aware that some items may do best with either a 25-degree cut in baking temperature, or a slighly-shorter baking time. If the convection feature is turned off (which is an option), then the normal baking time/temperature will again apply.
Every year at Christmastime, when my big oven is devoted to ham or turkey, I'm able to use this to turn out my knockout holiday corn pudding, which I bake in a rectangular Polish stoneware dish. It comes out evenly baked, beautifully-golden, and cooked in exactly the time the recipe calls for. When I say Christmas dinner is at three p.m., this machine helps me get my dinner served on the dot at that hour! My mother just about fell over with shock the first year this happened, since I was able to serve everything calmly & perfectly done at exactly the moment I said I would. There were no disasters like I've had with other broiler ovens in past years- the center of the casserole not getting done, rolls getting too brown on the bottom, the ham getting cold because the broiler oven was taking too long, etc.

This oven is so much larger on the interior than my previous broiler, and yet the platform is not much larger. The top of this serves as a wonderful "warming tray", as well, to keep rolls, biscuits, plates, etc. nice & hot while I wait for another item to finish cooking. The cooking rack is magnetized to the door, coming out as it should when the door is opened. This is safer & more secure. The heating element is well-covered, meaning that there is virtually no chance of a burnt-on piece of cheese (for example) causing that icky smoky smell or flare-ups to occur. So that is one more safety & taste issue solved, right there. Because the element is designed so well & is well-protected, I don't need to clean it up, which I was doing CONSTANTLY w/ my old broiler.
This machine is easy to keep clean. Even the door seems to get much less of that burnt-on, browned staining, even with daily use. Windex & a few cotton cleaning towels keep this looking like new. I don't find that it easily shows fingerprints or other spots.
This came with a round pizza pan & a two-piece broiler set. The broiler set holds three large or four small/medium steaks. The round pizza pan also works great for fries, rolls, biscuits, and more. Nothing has ever burned on either one of these pans. The pizza pan, especially, is nonstick. It browns everything easily- pizza has never turned out so well for me as it does on this pan. It's done in the center, heated through completely & even, no burnt edges, no soggy bottom- just perfect. I can & do put the pans in the dishwasher- they turn out fine. I can also put the oven rack itself in the dishwasher for cleaning & sanitizing- again, no issues whatsoever. I do wash the try underneath the heating element by hand, but it's also very nonstick & even burnt-on cheese comes off with no problem, and no soaking. The tray will stain, because of the burning-on element of high heat, but it can come clean w/ Comet & a scrub sponge (don't use steel wool on it, though).
If I had to choose between this & my big, traditional oven, I'd choose this every time!
I saw this Breville BOV800XL The Smart Oven 1800-Watt Convection Toaster Oven with Element IQ on display in a Bed Bath & Beyond, and it really got my attention. They had it on sale for $249, but being an Amazon customer I decided to check it out further Online at my favorite consumer site. You can guess where that is - and if you guessed AMAZON, you're correct.
I checked out the Breville site as well, as I wasn't familiar with the name. I also looked at the manual and the videos Breville has on their site - as well as what I could find here at Amazon. I also looked at the astounding number of positive five star and four star reviews there were in comparison to the few three, two, and one, star reviews as of 4/29/2012.

Did I read every review? Not hardly, but I read enough to know this smart oven appealed to a lot more people than just myself - and such a majority just can't be wrong.
The large Toastmaster convection oven broiler I have been using for some twenty years or so is a bit wider but lacking in depth, while being about the same height as the Breville Smart Oven. For all the years of wear and tear, it still doesn't look bad. But, that wasn't what had me looking at counter top ovens. I have an old small matching Toastmaster toaster oven that really makes my eyes hurt every time I look at it. It's worn, I mean really worn - enough so it looks like it may have survived shell blasts from several major battle engagements. Somehow it still works, partially, but it is bug-ugly now in capital UGLY letters. When the toast top browning lever function quit, that was the last straw - even if the oven function did still work on this small toaster. This thing had to go no matter who wanted to keep it around in my home!
When I saw the Breville, it was like some enticing music from a bygone era started playing. I instantly realized the Breville would allow me to clear out at least one crowded spot on my kitchen counter tops - by replacing BOTH of my Toastmasters.
The measurements showed me I could cook the frozen DiGiorno Supreme pizzas I so enjoy in the Breville Smart oven, and everything else usually cooked in the large Toastmaster - and that morning toast and other small items cooked in the small Toastmaster. The large Toastmaster wasn't deep enough to even think of cooking a pizza, so I have always grudgingly had to use the oven in my stove.
Cleaning the oven - a chore I hate. My stove oven isn't too bad - it's self-cleaning and burns itself clean in like 4-6 hours, depending. But, the stove oven uses plenty of kilowatts evey month and heats my kitchen to the point the air conditioning kicks in all too often. The large Toastmaster, get out the boxing gloves for 15 rounds of heavyweight boxing - and it never gets any easier, and you never get it spotless enough to look like you really cleaned the inside. The Breville, empty the tray and wipe it out - a KO in the 1st round! Now, hopefully the Breville will mean my power bill became a little greener - without some more deceitful Obama big government smirks to further inflate.

Protecting the oven electrically:
Since every "smart" appliance is susceptible to surges and other power line problems, and I have lost various of them through the years due to this, I keep surge protection on all of my appliances. For my Breville, especially since it has the bulky plug, I installed a 20 Amp GFCI wall outlet. Since I started using GFCI outlets with all computerized (or smart) appliances, I have never lost another appliance to electrical surge damage. At any rate, GFCI outlets should be in use in every kitchen as they will prevent user electrical shocks - tripping before they occur. At the 1800 watt rating, my 30 Amp house circuits with the 20 Amp GFCI outlets properly supply the Beville all the power it needs - considering the oven's rated 1800 watts divided by 120 Volts = 15 Amps.
Of note, my kitchen lighting (fluorescent and incandecent blubs) did begin some curious very slight flickering when I powered the Beville on for first time use preparation. I simply moved it to a wall outlet that wasn't on the same breaker as the lights - and then installed a GFCI outlet.
Also, the Beville plug isn't terribly bulky/long, but it does have an unusual feature I like. The plug has a finger hole through its center that makes removing it from an outlet very easy. The three prong grounded plug and cable also did not get warm during oven operation.
First time use preparation:
I used a dampened sponge to wipe down the stove interior, and washed the crumb tray and oven rack per the instructions. I also wiped the exterior and turned the oven to "pizza", again per the instructions, and allowed everything to dry before pressing the "start" button. The oven pre-heated, and then began the timed cooking cycle. I was glad I purchased the Breville BOV800CB Bamboo Cutting Board for Use with Smart Oven, as the top of the oven became very hot - easily hot enough to cause a severe burn from an accidental touch. The rest of the oven (sides) remained much cooler to my touch throughout the cycle.
