I'm sure for domestic use Henry would be excellent. He practically lifts our carpet off the floor, wheels around easily, has good quality tools and a no-nonsense approach to everything.

But this review is about workshop use. I started off with a cheapo £20 bagged vacuum, which was surprisingly excellent. But after a while, some razor-sharp metal swarf got into the motor and it ended up broken. My fault really. Then I bought a Vax cyclone cleaner. It's small and, being double-cyclone, triple-filter, bagless, HEPA, micron-particle-filtering, etc etc, is really on trend. But it's useless. It just about manages to clean carpets but is no use for anything else.

So I bought Henry. He has just sucked up about 1kg of mixed metal swarf and is still going strong. He didn't clog up. I only used his high power mode once, to get through a layer about 1" thick of curly mild steel face mill swarf. He struggled a little with lengths of 1/2" drill swarf (imagine curly pasta bits about 4" long and you'll be close) - but as long as they went into his nozzle, they ended up in the bag. Unbelievable.

My workshop floor is now cleaner than ever. And poor Henry has put on quite a bit of weight. Had I managed to do this with most vacuums, I imagine the handle would have broken off when I lifted the vacuum up. But Henry's handle is just a substantial as his suck.

Everything about Henry gives you confidence. He's a quality player and you won't be disappointed. Forget the rest and this bagless cyclone nonsense. Just buy Henry.

I read that Henry vacuums are still made in England - the manufacturer has not moved the factory overseas to capitalise on cheaper labour in order to 'stay competitive', i.e. make more profit for the owners. So good on Numatic.

Bought this because for years I've seen office cleaners using them and figured that they must therefore be very robust and effective. I seem to remember using one years ago myself as a summer hotel cleaner. I've also seen loads of broken, big name 'upright' cleaners by the bins outside various houses, and I've always found them prone to bits snapping off, brushes getting clogged etc. I assumed that the Henry would be really expensive because it is more or less of commercial standard, but this is not the case - less than £100 for one of these seems very good value.

The suction on the Henry is not insanely strong on green mode, but is perfectly adequate, and the boost button is there should you require. So as a vacuum cleaner it's effective, and can also be used on hard floors, which many/most houses have these days.

Plenty of extras with this, including different attachments and spare bags. The brush attachment looks as if it's made from horsehair rather than plastic, which is a nice quality touch - less likely to get sticky and curled up I think. Components seem well made and fit together properly, and it's obvious that the suction power plant is a heavy, simple, but therefore reliable unit. The power cable is very long indeed and is easy to wind in.

It is heavy overall, but this is because of the robustness of the rubber gasket and the solid power unit. It can be wheeled around easily enough, but I suppose for taking up and down stairs it could be a bit heavy.
